November 22, 2009 - Class Supplement

Footwork... That was the topic of the day. Chris made several references to different martial artists who did the foot work talked about on Sunday.

The first link is Bruce Lee's footwork. It has a good training idea with the "Double" movement. I would caution you on the slide step. Although it has a place, bringing your feet that close together in a street fight could yield dire results. The video has a pretty good zombie drill in it!

The next link is a Anderson Silva video. If you know anything about MMA, you know Anderson Silva. He is arguably the best fighter in the world. Does the footwork look familiar?

The third link is a nonprofessional boxer giving his take on things. He isn't perfect, but I wanted to have a video that wasn't. Good video nevertheless!

All of this footwork should look like something you have seen before. Keep practicing the footwork for class!

Hope to see everyone this Sunday!!!

Good video!

One of my hobbies is searching for hours on the internet to find videos that are quality. Without question, the best way to do this is Youtube. So, in my most recent search, I found a diamond in the rough.

You can find approximately 239828938998238923542398 videos of Mike Tyson knocking someone out. Although I could never get sick of them, they don't share the whole story.

I found this video by looking for "Dodging, Ducking, Evasion" in boxing. This is a truely great video of Tyson showing how good his head movement really was. Watch this guy move!

November 8, 2009 - Class Supplement

On Sunday we covered combat kicking. For some of you, there was some review. For others, there was some new concepts to think about. Kicking depends on terrain, targets, and footwear.

If you cannot throw a kick technique with the footwear you have on right now, then it is worthless. Spinning jump kicks and other such things are cute and nice, but if you can't do them with a pair of combat boots on, why bother?

This is where Savate and Muay Boran come in. The sharp, powerful low kicks of these two fighting styles are powerful and effective enough to be used in a real street fight.

Here is a video of Muay Boran kicking defenses. I like this video because it shows one of the kicks we teach applied in a defensive way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-umCbT-Iik

Here is a good Savate video. The techniques are not explained fully, but you can see how this guy does the low kicks we showed in class. It's also pretty good intro to savate video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFLrgdncDcY

This final video has more to do with what we did at the very end of class. Although Mark and I did more typical boxing, it is important to keep in mind that street fighting is what we really want to practice. This is one video of a series of really good street boxing/fighting videos on YouTube. Check them out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFpEoMsW8kg

Hope to see you all Sunday!!!!
