One of my Favorite Videos!

Now, if you are not familiar with Bas Rutten, he's a guy that must be studied by anyone who likes self defense. Bas Rutten in this video is fighting in a league that does not allow close fist strikes to the head. The founders of the league figured that open fist strikes don't hurt as much as closed fist strikes. Check out this video if you want to see why they are so damn wrong!

May 31, 2009 - Class Supplement

If you are anything like me, you got a work out on Sunday. Although this was not my intention, I did enjoy it! Have no fear. Some rest and proper nutrition and you will be up and running in no time! I recommend stretching, push-ups, body weight squats and even more stretching. Another thing that tends to help, is a easy activity. Basketball or Tennis seem to be the best for me.

This week we covered a lot of older concepts we have worked on. For some, this was more review. For others, it was a needed lesson. Mixing your different strikes and attacks into a fluid chain is what it is all about. Punching and kicking alone isn't enough. Grappling must exist because history has shown us that grappling happens if there are no rules. http://historical-pankration.com/ This is without question my favorite martial arts page. I think the Greeks had a great system of fighting. I also think that the Greeks trained for pure combat. Notice how close all the strikes are. If you look at some of the picture combinations, you will see that grappling happens. This was also apparent in the German and Italian martial systems of the middle ages. You can find countless UFC or street fighting videos on the Internet that further support this theory. For this reason, Chris and I had everyone drill the combos into grappling.

2 important techniques that we covered are the Sit out and the Hip Heist. Both are basically the same move, just done in opposite directions. They look like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kdfov1FQ0to

They have multiple applications like we covered in class, but this is a good example of from a front position.

We ended class with a jump in the right direction. Chris and I would like to start cranking up the energy of some of our drills. As you can all see, this idea is ripe for people getting hurt. This is why we have started at a fairly light level of impact and grappling. I want everyone to make sure you are taking it easy. Our goal is to increase our skill level. This will not be accomplished by hurting one another. Take it easy, make sure you don't take it personal and learn as much as you can. Eventually Chris and I will have 4 basic forms of sparing. Standing Rondori, Ground Rondori, Free-Fighting, Scenarios.

Ground Rondori - Wrestling from the ground. No striking. Submission, choke, tap out, cause the victory.

Standing Rondori - Wrestling from standing position. Take downs are OK. Same rules as Ground Rondori

Free Fighting - Basically "Vale Tudo". UFC, Pride, WEC type of rules. However, we will never be doing this at 100% in class. Many safety precautions will be taken.

Scenarios - Real life role playing situations. We have done a few of these in class. As skill levels and safety increase, scenarios will get more intense. Sometimes will have multiple attackers or defenders.

Hope to see you all next Sunday!
